How to Make Your Bedroom More Comfortable for Sleep

Your bedroom should be a place of tranquillity and rest. But if you’re finding that you’re having trouble sleeping you may start o associate your bedroom with feelings of frustration, unrest and stress. This can all build to make your lack of sleep worse, as you stop associating your bedroom with sleep, and instead associate it with tossing and turning. It’s therefore important that you do everything you can to make your bedroom more comfortable for sleeping in. 

But just how do you do that? Well, we’ve put together a fool-proof list of things you can do to transform your sleep space and make your bedroom more comfortable.

 

1 – Get the temperature right

One of the first steps in making your bedroom more comfortable is making sure that the temperature is right. Though this can be tricky, especially if it’s hot outside, having a cool bedroom is crucial for your sleep comfort. We all know what it’s like, you go to bed too hot, your covers stick to you and you feel sticky and uncomfortable. Creating the right temperature can work wonders and make your bedroom more comfortable. You could try opening a window if it isn’t too loud outside or using an electric fan or air conditioning.

 

2 – Use plenty of soft furnishings

Adding soft cushions, throws and blankets to your bed is a great way to make your bedroom look more comfortable. The soft furnishings will make your bed look more inviting and make you want to get into bed for sleep. It’ll also make you associate your bed with comfort, which can be a huge help in getting to sleep. Try decorations made of soft fabrics and in calming pale colours to really identify your bed as a calming and peaceful area. Developing these associations will help you feel sleepy and comfortable when thinking about or getting into your bed and can be a quick and cheap solution to your inability to sleep.

 

3- De-clutter

Busy bedroom, busy mind. Having a lot going on in your bedroom can cause your brain to remain active when trying to sleep. Try clearing any work-related items from your bedroom and removing any rubbish like old papers, boxes or magazines. Having lots of unneeded items in your room can make it look highly cluttered and this can increase your levels of anxiety, making it hard to sleep. If you keep a large amount of work papers or work resources in your room you’ll also find it hard to switch off from your work, causing an inability to sleep as your mind stays active. 4- Keep the room dark

One of the most important conditions for making your bedroom more comfortable for sleep is darkness. Too much light can stimulate your brain and make your body think it’s daytime, which makes it harder to fall asleep, or to get a good quality of sleep. Try using thicker curtains or solid blinds that block out the light and prevent that early morning sunrise waking you up before it needs to. 5 – A new lick of paint

Decorating your bedroom walls in light colours can add to the calming effect your bedroom needs. Try creams, whites, soft greys or even pastel colours for the ideal peaceful atmosphere. When trying to make your bedroom more comfortable try to avoid extravagant patterns and colours and these can have a stimulating effect, which works to keep you awake. Soft, soothing patterns and colours, however, are ideal for helping you to unwind and feel calm at the end of the day.

 

6- Remove unnecessary electronics

Electronic devices, especially back-lit devices are known to stimulate the brain which can make it harder for you to fall asleep. By removing any unnecessary electronics from your room, you’ll make your bedroom more comfortable by removing the temptation to be drawn back into the real world that may stimulate, excite or frustrate you. Mobile phones, in particular, should be removed from the bedroom if possible. If you sleep with your mobile close by, you are more likely to be tempted to check it regularly and in doing so you may notice notifications or messages that draw you into communications or set your mind to thinking instead of sleeping. If you need to use your mobile as an alarm, try leaving the ringer on silent and shutting the phone in your bedside drawer, or out of reach I some way, overnight so you’ll be less likely to check it.

 

7- Have a comfortable mattress

Having a comfortable and inviting mattress is probably one of the most effective things you can do to make your bedroom more comfortable.
